Media Temple Grid Service

From clazh.com

I moved to Media Temple hosting 4 days back, yesterday night I moved again to BlueHost. While using mediatemple web hosting, My Site has been horribly slow and constantly down for 2 full days and the average response time for the site was more than 8 secs (ideally it shouldn’t cross 1 sec). While the initial experience with MediaTemple was good i.e. buying and setting things up. The support later turned out to be very slow and poor, MediaTemple as professional web hosting provider doesn’t have a 24X7 support, since I am an international customer they took more than 24 hours to reply to any of my questions.

The other webhost is Bluehost. BlueHost was a refreshing change I clicked on the Live Chat button on the main page and was immediately connected with a sales person who clarified some of my doubts later I again used Live Chat to get help configuring the MX records since I use Google Apps to maintain my Email.

Overall, MediaTemple hosting experience has been a bad one for me. For the high cost of hosting it is not worth it. Though they themselves admitted that they were overwhelmed with support questions and hence replies were being delayed. But what I cant understand is why they can’t have a 24X7 support like dreamhost or live chat support like bluehost and the ability to mark support questions as High, Critical, medium etc.The only positive part was they were very professional in handling the issues and immediately refunded my money back.

Hey paul I been monitoring your site (MediaTemple) and a few others (bluehost, dreamhost, etc) using moitor.us and various other tools. I found your response time(MT Grid) a bit slow. I eliminated sites hosted on dedicated accounts. I found that people hosted on bluehost seemed to have much better response time. I will do a write up shortly when I get back home from office. what are your thoughts on this?

So why did I still go for MediaTemple? Well to be frank I am got sucker into the Grid hosting marketing, everyone seemed to be telling how good they were and able to handle the DIGG effect etc. (heck dreamhost handled the DIGG effect for me without a glitch) I now realised that MT grid server is nothing but a marketing bluff.

MediaTemple Bad Reviews from Macrumors Forum:

I am thinking about getting a (dv) from MediaTemple.

What do you think of them?

had Media Temple. Found MediaTemple bad, to be overrated and extremely unreliable. I no longer deal with oversold hosts like MediaTemple and now use medialayer.net for hosting.

I use MediaTemple now for a variety of small business and personal websites. Great service, decent product.
Worth the money, but you’re not paying all that much.

Can’t vouch for the dedicated server accounts, but we’re on the grid server on MediaTemple and it’s a nightmare (latency, downtime, easily overwhelmed servers). We’re leaving MediaTemple hosting at our organization for this and many other reasons – including horrific customer service, and a tech support department that blames you first and then makes half-assed attempts at fixing problems.

MediaTemple Bad Review: Media Temple Sucks by Mark!

This bad review of media temple web hosting company was posted by Mark on Small Orange Web Hosting Forum and the replies of his thread.

Hello, I’m a former beta tester for (mt) Media Temple’s (gs) Grid-Server service. Basically, it’s a grid of servers all hooked up to eliminate downtime. It isn’t working right. I’ve tried again and again to get help, and they will usually tell me something like “we’re aware of this issue and are actively working on it”.

It’s been a year. I am now officially fed up. If you google “media temple speed”, you will get MY BLOG as the first result, with my complaints. They just aren’t at all what they used to be. I’ve been a customer since March of 2006.

That site is a simple Joomla! installation. It takes anywhere from 2 to 30 seconds to load. I’m paying $20 a month for garbage. The reliability is horrible. One moment its fast, the other its a speed demon. The above site is a corporate site; I can’t afford that.

Does ASO provide EXCELLENT uptime? EXCELLENT speed? EXCELLENT support? If you say anything less than YES! to those, I’m not switching to ASO. Although, a large amount of webmasters swear by ASO.Is there a noticeable speed difference between the SHARED and VPS hosting? Should I go with VPS if I get large volumes of incoming email daily?

Thanks in advance,
Mark Zakariya

I had a short job writing code for a site that was hosted on Media Temple. I really had trouble getting SSH running and some of the installed software was pretty ancient. Everything seemed to be very slow. I hope that I never have anything to do with them again.
